Quarter million dollar DLA solicitation for lithium batteries

DLA Land and Maritime has issued a solicitation for lithium batteries used on the C-130J aircraft.  This Lithium ELT battery pack 6135-01-461-2915 is used with the Model B406-4 Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT). These 406 MHz distress beacons are used in conjunction with the Cospas-Sarsat System in the event of an aircraft crash.

These Emergency Locator Transmitters can be manually activated by a pilot using a switch or automatically activated by a G-switch. The G-switch inside the beacon that activates automatically when it detects excessive G-forces experienced during a crash. ELTs will transmit the distress signal for at 24 hours. This Artex/ACR Electronics ELT Lithium ELT battery pack part number 452-0133 is typically replaced every 5 years.

The last company to supply these batteries was Aviatrix, Inc for $714.70 each in quantity of 140. A larger order of 316 was sold for $430.85 each.  Other suppliers include Southern Cross Aviation, FBC Enterprises, and Kampi Components.

The solicitation calls for 658 battery packs.  Based on past procurement history we estimate the value of this contract at $284,940.

All offers are due by September 24, 2022.

Another solicitation that might be of interest to battery suppliers is SP3300-22-Q-0128 which includes 393 6 and 12 volt batteries used in golf carts, cranes and emergency lights. This one closes 9/22/2022.
