Federal holidays fall on a Monday 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday Act (82 Stat. 250)
The First Labor Day was declared a national holiday on June 28, 1894 through a congressional bill. On June 22, 1894 discussions took place in consideration of Senate bill 730 (S. 730) making Labor Day a legal holiday according to the Senate Congressional Record.
Twenty-Five of the United States were initially settled upon Labor Day being either the first Monday of September or the 1st day of October. Congress wanted to make the observance of Labor Day uniform so that All could enjoy vacation privileges on the same day. “The labor originations throughout the country have united asking that the first Monday of September be set apart as a holiday.”
The bill read, as follows:
Be it enacted, ect., That the first Monday in September in each year, being the day celebrated and known as labor’s holiday, is hereby made a legal public holiday, to all intents and purposes, in the same manner as Christmas, the 1st day of January, the 22d day of February, the 30th day of May, and the 4th day of July are now made by law public holidays.
