U.S. Marines Can’t find a supplier for HazMat Suits

CBRN HazMat Chemical Protective Suit

CBRN HazMat Chemical Protective Suit

This week the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Troop Support Clothing and Textiles supply chain posted its 3rd Solicitation looking for HazMat Chemical Protective Suits based on the needs of the U.S. Marines Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF) team.

As of this writing the 3 posted government solicitations have NOT been awarded, potential value of this order could be worth over $675,000.00 for Chemical Protective Suits.

These solicitations represent 3 separate requests coming from the U.S. Marines CBIRF office Indian Head, Maryland.  These Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Chemical Protective Suits NSN 8415-01-627-9840 are part of a larger system (DRSKO) managed by the Joint Program Executive Officer for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND).

The Dismounted Reconnaissance Sets, Kits and Outfits (DRSKO) are part of the CBRN DRS program.  It’s essentially a comprehensive kit (comprised of close to 500 items) that are used by CBRN warfighters for protection, decontamination and providing other capabilities to support safe operations.

Why can’t I find Government Solicitations for items I sell?

One reason you might not be able to find solicitations is the solicitation is incorrectly categorized.  When the government posts a solicitation, they choose both a Federal Supply Class (FSC) and NAICS code to best represent the request.  We’ve seen this miss-categorization occur over the past 25 years as we helped our BidLink clients overcome this dilemma.

This specific solicitation was categorized under the INCORRECT North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code.  This solicitation for HazMat Chemical Protective Suits was classified under NAICS code 711510 – Independent Artists, Writers, and Performers, a far cry from Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) equipment.

The Government buyer should have chosen NAICS code 339113 – Biohazard protective clothing and accessories manufacturing, a much better choice.  However, if your saved bid searches only included NAICS code 339113 you’d have missed this one.

How do I search for government bids using NAICs codes?

Select the most appropriate codes that relate to items you are looking to sell, AND USE OTHER METHODS like Federal Supply Classes and list of words. And Yes! You will get many results to review and some might be irrelevant.  That’s when sophisticated bid search tools like BidLink can help.

Companies with interest in seeing chemical protective clothing or supplies bids (and this specific solicitation) search using the Federal Supply Class FSC 8415 – Special Purpose Clothing.
